Description:
The Navy Hawaii Regional Housing Privatization
Project consists of roughly 2,000 units in five family housing
sites surrounding Pearl Harbor. The solution for three of the
five sites involved total demolition and redevelopment, while
the other two sites required major renovations. In every case,
site planning and architectural designs were chosen to encourage
neighborly interaction and promote a sense of community so important
to the transient lifestyles of military families. Also, designs
were created to blend with the island architectural styles and
respond to local climate conditions. As many as 20 different plans
in single-family and duplex configurations, each with three or
four elevation variations, were created to meet the program requirements
and provide streetscape diversity. The plans range from relatively
simple three-bedroom homes for enlisted men and women to larger
homes with more amenities for higher-ranking officers. Each single-family
plan has four variations of garage placement to allow for unique
site conditions and to help avoid magnificent mature trees.
