Description:
The Ranger Cottage is a small office building designed for the
City of Boulder Mountain Parks staff. Located at the foot of the
Flatirons in the Chautauqua Park Historic District, this design
solution was part of a larger review process which consisted of
twenty-two public hearings. It was the first new building to be
built at Chautauqua since the early 1900’s.
The sensitive location coupled with an ambitious program and
an extremely limited budget posed a considerable challenge. The
final design solution reflects Chautauqua's turn of the century
historic spirit combined with mountain ranger rustic detailing.
A gracious verandah welcomes the public to a self-serve outdoor
office where information about the mountain parks is provided.
The building details include peeled pole columns, exposed rafter
tails, and deer brackets. The result is a fresh look with ties
to the past.
This project demonstrates that appropriate design solutions are
still possible even with limited budgets and difficult contexts.
